2020 Ice age races are cancelled

It is with deep sadness and regret that we must announce the cancellation of the 2020 Ice Age Trail 50.

After consultation with health professionals, the state park service and the Badgerland Striders, we have determined that an event on the scale of Ice Age is not possible without directly compromising the health and safety of our volunteers, runners and spectators.

The decision was also made aware that the moving target of COVID-19 could force us to cancel only weeks before race day, which would create even more turmoil and hardships for everyone, especially runners travelling to Wisconsin from other parts of the country.  (As we write to you today, gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited by the DNR.)

All reasonable alternatives were considered, including wave starts, holding the events on different days, going to a self-supported format and a virtual race option (there will be none of that.)

Ultimately, though, our decision came down to the measures we would have to take to protect the health of our volunteers – many of whom have been helping Ice Age runners for 20 years or more – and the recognition that we cannot stage an event that would resemble the Ice Age Trail 50 race that our participants have come to expect.

In response, all registered runners will be granted a two-year deferral option.

If you are registered for the 2020 race, your entry will be automatically moved into the 2021 race on Saturday, May 8.  If you cannot run with us that day, we will push your entry into May 2022, but you must notify us by December 1, 2020.

This situation has also forced us to modify our customarily benevolent policies as follows:

● Deferral requests received after December 1, 2020 will not be accepted for any reason or under any circumstances.

● No additional entries will be opened or otherwise available for the May 2021 race.

● Bib transfers and refunds will not be permitted.

Finally, let me say that your patience and support during this uncertain time is truly appreciated.  We are as upset as you are. Staging the Ice Age Trail 50 is a labor of love for all of us, but we will be back in 2021 and we look forward to having you there with us.

Wishing you health and happiness and endless trails to explore —

Jeff Mallach
